These writing samples provide us with valuable data that informs many aspects of the operation of our schools. The DWA provides us a platform in which we are able to read student writing across classes, grade levels, schools, and districts. Teachers analyze the writing to inform instruction. Teacher teams analyze the writing to improve horizontal and vertical alignment.
With guidance from Ms. Graham, these students work through the writing process on a bi-weekly basis. These young men are not only experiencing the writing process, but multiple foundational reading skills as well.
Students begin to compose group stories that are teacher-led and quickly move to independent writing. These practices far exceed typical writing standards prescribed by the state. Their group stories show evidence of Prewriting, Drafting, Revising and Publishing, the same of which is expected on the 3rd and 5th grade writing assessments.
With the strategic blend of reading and writing skills, these kindergarten students are well on their way to becoming fluent readers and writers.
I think this simulation helped students to prepare their minds for the exam. Lastly, we have a period in the school day where all students are writing.
We knew that we could count on it again; the routines are stronger than ever. The gap between the performance of general education students and students with special needs SN closed significantly.
The example of math scores demonstrates this fact. The third grade scores also showed how the scores of a grade level with a high percent of SN students closed the performance gap. The school, which placed 70th among 84 elementary schools in its district on math scores, moved to 32nd in a single year.
